Everything you need to know about MBA, CAT, and B-School admissions
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is India's most prestigious MBA entrance exam, used for admission to IIMs and 1,200+ other B-schools. It tests Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning. A high CAT percentile is the primary gateway to top MBA colleges.
Ideally begin 9â12 months before the exam. If you're a working professional, start even earlier. Focus first on fundamentals, then move to mock tests 3â4 months before the exam. The last 60 days should be purely revision and full-length mock analysis.
IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore typically shortlist candidates with 99%ile+ overall. However, sectional cut-offs also matter â you need strong scores in all three sections (VARC, DILR, QA). Work experience, academics, and diversity are also weighed during final selection.
Top B-schools evaluate a combination of factors: CAT/GMAT score, academic consistency (10th, 12th, graduation marks), work experience quality, extracurriculars, and interview/GD performance. A 7+ CGPA in graduation, 85%+ in 10th and 12th, and 2â3 years of relevant work experience is generally considered strong.
Yes â fresh graduates are accepted at most Indian B-schools including IIMs. However, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore do give weightage to work experience in their shortlisting criteria. Programs like PGP generally welcome freshers, and work experience becomes more important for PGPX (executive MBA) programs.
MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a degree awarded by universities, while PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is a diploma awarded by autonomous institutes like IIMs and ISB. PGDM programs are often considered equivalent to or even superior to MBA programs due to their industry-oriented curriculum and autonomy in course design.
