CAT 2026 will be conducted by IIM Indore on Sunday, November 29, 2026, in three sessions. Online registration is open from August 3, 2026, at 10:00 AM to September 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM. The application fee is ₹2,700 for General, EWS and NC-OBC candidates and ₹1,350 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Candidates must apply only through the official CAT website.
For most applicants, CAT 2026 is the first major step towards MBA admission in the 22 Indian Institutes of Management and numerous non-IIM business schools. The test evaluates verbal and reading ability, data interpretation and logical reasoning, and quantitative ability. It does not, however, decide admission on its own. Each institute sets separate eligibility, shortlisting, interview and final-selection rules.
This article separates confirmed CAT 2026 information from pattern-based expectations. Dates, fees, eligibility and the 120-minute structure come from the official notification and bulletin. The exact number of questions, topic-wise weightage, difficulty level, score-to-percentile conversion and institute cut-offs cannot be known in advance. Wherever recent-paper trends are used for preparation, they are identified as trends rather than official promises.
As of August 13, 2026, CAT 2026 registration is active. Candidates have until September 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM to complete payment and submit the form. Waiting for the final day is risky because an incomplete payment, rejected upload or connectivity problem can prevent submission.

Frequently Asked Questions
CAT stands for Common Admission Test. It is a national-level management entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management. CAT 2026 is being administered by IIM Indore on behalf of the IIMs. It is used for admission to postgraduate management programmes and certain doctoral or specialised programmes listed by participating institutes.
CAT is a computer-based test, but it is not an at-home online examination. A candidate must report to the centre and session printed on the admit card. The examination interface appears on a computer provided at the venue. Candidates do not choose the final exam slot, centre or reporting time.
The CAT 2026 score will be used primarily for the 2027–28 admission cycle. It can be submitted to programmes at IIMs and to non-IIM institutions that officially register to use CAT scores. A candidate must apply separately to most non-IIM colleges. Merely registering for CAT does not automatically create an application at FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR Mumbai, IIFT, IIT departments or other independent institutions.
CAT tests aptitude rather than management theory. There is no section on accounting, economics, business studies, current affairs or general knowledge in the confirmed CAT 2026 structure. A commerce or engineering background is not required. Students from arts, humanities, sciences, law, medicine, agriculture and other disciplines can take the examination if they satisfy the degree and marks requirements.
No. CAT 2026 is the admission test used by the IIMs, but many independent business schools and university departments also accept it. Each participating non-IIM institution decides which programmes will use CAT, the minimum score or percentile, the application deadline and the selection method. Candidates should not assume that every MBA programme at an institution accepts CAT.
No. CAT does not issue a universal pass mark. The scorecard reports section-wise and overall scaled scores and percentiles. Institutes then shortlist candidates according to their own policies. One college may require strong sectional percentiles, another may place more emphasis on overall percentile, and another may combine CAT performance with school marks, graduation marks, work experience, academic diversity or gender diversity.
One of the most common sources of confusion is the presentation of last year's paper pattern as though it were a guaranteed CAT 2026 pattern. Candidates should use the following distinction.
| Information | Status on August 13, 2026 |
| Exam on November 29, 2026 | Officially confirmed |
| Registration from August 3 to September 15 | Officially confirmed |
| Fee of ₹2,700 or ₹1,350, depending on category | Officially confirmed |
| Computer-based test in three sessions | Officially confirmed |
| Three sections: VARC, DILR and QA | Officially confirmed |
| 120-minute test with 40 minutes per section | Officially confirmed |
| Approximately 170 test cities | Officially confirmed |
| Exactly 68 questions | Not confirmed in the advance bulletin; a planning assumption based on CAT 2025 |
| VARC 24, DILR 22 and QA 22 questions | Recent-paper reference, not a guarantee |
| +3 for correct, −1 for an incorrect MCQ and no penalty for an incorrect TITA | Recent CAT marking convention; check the official CAT 2026 tutorial and instructions when released |
| Topic-wise syllabus and weightage | Not officially prescribed |
| Difficulty level | Cannot be known before the test |
| Score needed for a given percentile | Cannot be known before all sessions are evaluated and normalised |
| IIM interview cut-offs | Institute-specific; many CAT 2026-based admission policies are still to be published |
| Correction-window dates | Not part of the core schedule confirmed in the bulletin at the time of writing |
For preparation, the recent 68-question structure is a sensible working model. For publication and decision-making, it should remain labelled as expected until the CAT 2026 mock or final test instructions establish the question count.
| Event | CAT 2026 date | What the candidate should do |
| Official notification | July 26, 2026 | Read the bulletin and eligibility document |
| Registration begins | August 3, 2026, 10:00 AM | Create the account and start the form |
| Registration deadline | September 15, 2026, 5:00 PM | Submit the form and complete payment before the cut-off |
| Admit card download begins | November 4, 2026 | Download, verify and print the admit card |
| CAT 2026 exam | November 29, 2026 | Report at the allotted centre and time |
| Provisional answer key | Not yet announced | Check the official portal after the examination |
| Objection window | Not yet announced | Review the response sheet and submit a supported objection, if needed |
| CAT 2026 result | Likely by the first week of January 2027 | Download and preserve the scorecard |
| Score valid until | December 31, 2027 | Use it only within the stated validity period |
The official result wording is a likely declaration by the first week of January 2027. A December result is possible based on previous years, but it is not an official CAT 2026 result date. Publishing a specific December date as confirmed would be inaccurate.
From August 13 to November 29, 2026, candidates have 108 days before the examination. That is enough time for a disciplined preparation cycle consisting of concept repair, topic-wise practice, sectional tests, full-length mocks and revision. It is not enough time to study every available book or postpone mock tests until the final month.
The official CAT 2026 eligibility document specifies the basic conditions. A candidate must satisfy one of the accepted qualification routes and the applicable marks requirement.
A candidate must hold a bachelor's degree awarded by a recognised university or educational institution, with at least:
50% marks or an equivalent CGPA for General, EWS and NC-OBC candidates; or
45% marks or an equivalent CGPA for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.
The degree must be awarded by an institution recognised under the conditions stated in the eligibility document, or the candidate must possess an equivalent qualification recognised by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Candidates appearing in the final year of a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification may register. Candidates who have completed the degree requirements but are waiting for results may also apply. This eligibility is provisional. If selected, the candidate must submit the certificate and evidence required by the admitting IIM within its deadline.
A final-year candidate should not enter guessed marks for an unannounced result. The registration guide explains how to choose the current degree status and enter completed academic information. The admission offer can be withdrawn if the candidate fails to complete the degree or does not meet the required percentage by the institute's deadline.
Candidates who have completed CA, CS, ICWA/CMA or are Fellows of the Institute of Actuaries of India can apply if they meet the applicable minimum marks requirement. The exact qualification details should be entered in the designated professional-degree section of the form.
If the university provides an official conversion formula, the candidate should use that method. If no conversion scheme is provided, CAT eligibility rules use the equivalent calculation stated in the official document: divide the obtained CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiply by 100. The applicant should retain proof of the university's grading and conversion rule because institutes may verify it later.
For example, a CGPA of 8.1 on a 10-point scale converts to 81% only when the direct ratio method applies. A candidate should not use this calculation if the university officially prescribes a different multiplier or formula.
CAT 2026 has no upper age limit. The official eligibility conditions do not impose a fixed attempt limit. A graduate can take CAT again even after several previous attempts. However, each annual score has its own validity period; an old CAT score cannot automatically be carried into a later admission cycle.
Work experience is not mandatory to register for CAT 2026. Fresh graduates and final-year students are eligible. Some IIMs and business schools award profile points for eligible work experience during shortlisting or final selection, but that is an admission-policy matter rather than a condition for taking CAT.
Internships, articleship, apprenticeship, part-time work and family-business involvement may be treated differently by different institutions. Candidates should enter only the work experience that the CAT form asks them to report and should preserve appointment letters, salary evidence, experience letters and joining or relieving records for later verification.
The presence of a past or current backlog does not by itself create a separate CAT ban, but the candidate must still meet the degree-completion and percentage requirements. A final admission can be cancelled if the qualifying degree remains incomplete after the relevant institute's deadline. Candidates should read the admission rules of every target programme instead of relying on a general statement about backlogs.
A degree earned through distance or open learning can satisfy CAT eligibility when the awarding institution and qualification are appropriately recognised and the required marks are met. The mode of study is not a substitute for recognition. Applicants with an unusual qualification should obtain written clarification from the CAT helpdesk or the target institute before the registration deadline.
Meeting the CAT 2026 eligibility criteria only permits a candidate to sit for the test. It does not guarantee an interview call or admission. IIMs may verify eligibility at multiple stages, and each programme can impose additional academic, subject, work-experience or category-document requirements.
The CAT 2026 eligibility document states the reservation framework followed by the IIMs under applicable legal requirements.
| Category | Reservation stated for IIM seats |
| Scheduled Caste | 15% |
| Scheduled Tribe | 7.5% |
| Non-Creamy Layer Other Backward Classes | 27% |
| Economically Weaker Sections | Up to 10% |
| Persons with Benchmark Disabilities | 5% |
PwBD reservation is horizontal and operates according to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and the conditions described in the official document. The candidate must meet the benchmark-disability definition and upload the prescribed certificate.
An OBC certificate issued only for a state list may not establish eligibility under the Central NC-OBC category. Candidates should confirm that their community appears in the applicable Central List and that the certificate establishes non-creamy-layer status in the format and validity period required for central educational institutions.
For CAT 2026, candidates should use the current certificate instructions and proformas on the official portal. If an updated certificate is under process, the portal may require an undertaking, the older certificate and proof of application in one PDF. Follow the live registration guide exactly; do not upload an informal self-written explanation.
EWS applicants need a valid Income and Asset Certificate for the relevant period and in the prescribed format. The category entered in the form must be supported by a valid document. A fee concession is not available merely because a candidate has applied for a certificate but cannot establish the claimed category under the rules.
SC and ST candidates must upload a valid certificate issued by a competent authority. The name, category and other details should match the application. A blurred, incomplete or incorrectly issued certificate can create problems during verification even if the online upload appears successful.
PwBD candidates should read the official disability, medical and scribe documentation carefully. Where a scribe or compensatory time is requested, the candidate must select the relevant options and submit the required forms within the process. Do not wait until the examination day to disclose a requirement that should have been recorded during registration.
Reservation percentages do not create a guaranteed seat. Candidates must still meet the programme's eligibility rules, qualifying cut-offs and selection standards for the applicable category.
The CAT 2026 application is online. Use only the official portal and avoid links shared by unknown agents, social-media pages or unofficial payment collectors. The official CAT 2026 Registration Guide should remain open while the form is being completed.
Visit iimcat.ac.in and select the new-candidate registration option. Enter the candidate's name, date of birth, email address and mobile number exactly as required. Use a unique, active email account and mobile number that will remain available throughout the admission cycle.
Complete OTP verification and record the generated CAT User ID and password securely. Do not create duplicate accounts merely because an OTP or email is delayed. First check the spam folder, SMS filtering settings and the official troubleshooting guidance.
Complete the personal information, nationality, category, PwBD status and communication-address fields. Spell the name consistently with the identity and academic documents that will be used during verification. A shortened middle name, swapped surname or incorrect date of birth can become a serious issue later.
Category selection deserves particular care. The official advertisement states that the category cannot be changed after registration. A candidate should not claim NC-OBC, EWS, SC, ST or PwBD status without the supporting document required for that category.
Enter Class 10, Class 12 or diploma, bachelor's degree and any higher qualification details from the actual marksheets. Check whether the form asks for aggregate marks across all subjects and semesters rather than a selected set of subjects. Do not calculate a “best of five” percentage unless the registration instructions expressly require it.
For graduation, select the correct status: completed, final year or awaiting result. Enter the university, institution, degree, discipline, start and completion information, marks or CGPA and conversion details. Candidates with dual degrees, integrated degrees or lateral-entry qualifications should follow the guide applicable to their structure.
Report only eligible full-time work experience in the format requested by the portal. Use correct start and end dates and avoid overlapping employment periods. The form may calculate duration from dates, so a small date error can alter the experience total.
Candidates still employed should follow the guide for the “to” date or current-employment option. Keep employer letters and salary records ready. The ability to type experience into the form does not mean every target institute will award it admission points.
The CAT fee is paid once irrespective of the number of eligible IIM programmes selected in the CAT form. Review the programme list rather than automatically choosing only a flagship MBA at a few institutes. A specialised programme may have different academic or work-experience conditions.
Select every IIM programme that you would genuinely consider and for which you appear eligible. Missing an appropriate programme can prevent consideration under that programme's process. Conversely, selecting a programme does not guarantee eligibility or a shortlist; the concerned IIM will apply its own rules.
Candidates can arrange five test-city preferences. The authority will try to allot a preferred city subject to capacity and administrative feasibility. A city preference is not a confirmed centre, and the exact venue will be stated only on the admit card.
Choose practical cities with reliable travel options. The first preference should normally be the easiest city to reach. Use the next two for nearby alternatives, and the final two as realistic backups. Avoid a backup city that would require an unaffordable flight, unsafe overnight journey or uncertain accommodation.
Upload a recent passport-style photograph, signature and applicable certificates. Preview every file after upload. The face, signature, certificate number, issuing authority, dates, seals and category details should remain readable.
The official registration guide and live portal are the final authority for file size, dimensions and format. The guide indicates a 1200 × 1200-pixel photograph space and an 80 mm × 35 mm signature format, with photo and signature uploads in JPG/JPEG. Because third-party pages publish conflicting dimensions, candidates should follow the validation displayed on the live CAT 2026 form rather than an old screenshot or recycled article.
Complete the form in two passes. In the first pass, enter and save each section. In the second, compare every field with its source document. Check the name, date of birth, category, PwBD choice, school marks, graduation status, CGPA conversion, work dates, programme choices, test-city order and uploaded files.
Accept the declaration only after review, then pay the applicable fee. Wait for the payment status to update. Do not refresh the browser, press the back button repeatedly or begin a second transaction while the first is processing.
After successful submission, download the application PDF and payment receipt. Open the PDF rather than assuming that the download is correct. Confirm the photograph, signature, selected programmes and payment status. Save copies in at least two secure locations.
Most academic information is entered from documents rather than uploaded as a full marksheet set during initial registration. Nevertheless, candidates should keep the following records available so that every number can be entered accurately.
| Requirement | What to keep ready |
| Contact information | Active and unique email address and mobile number |
| Identity details | Name and date of birth matching official records |
| Class 10 | Board, school, year, marks or CGPA and aggregate calculation |
| Class 12 or diploma | Board, discipline, year and aggregate marks |
| Bachelor's degree | University, institution, programme, discipline, semester-wise marks or CGPA and degree status |
| Higher qualification | Master's or professional qualification details, if applicable |
| Work experience | Employer names, employment type and accurate joining/leaving dates |
| Photograph | Recent, clear colour passport-style image |
| Signature | Clear running signature on plain white paper |
| Category proof | Current NC-OBC, EWS, SC or ST certificate, where applicable |
| PwBD proof | Prescribed disability certificate and related forms, where applicable |
| Final-year proof | Prescribed certificate or undertaking, where required |
| Payment | Supported online payment method and sufficient transaction limit |
Use a recent photograph with a plain, uncluttered background and a clearly visible face.
Do not upload a selfie, filtered portrait, group photo, photocopy of a photograph or an image with another person's face.
Sign naturally on clean white paper. Do not type the name as a substitute for a signature.
Use the format, size and dimensions accepted by the live CAT 2026 portal.
Scan the complete category or PwBD certificate, including all relevant pages.
Self-attest certificates when the official instructions require it.
Check that every PDF is readable at normal zoom and not password-protected.
Use simple filenames and preserve the original files after submission.
| Candidate category | CAT 2026 registration fee |
| General | ₹2,700 |
| EWS | ₹2,700 |
| NC-OBC | ₹2,700 |
| SC | ₹1,350 |
| ST | ₹1,350 |
| PwBD | ₹1,350 |
The fee is paid once for CAT 2026, irrespective of the number of IIM programmes selected in the form. It is non-refundable. Bank or payment-gateway charges may apply according to the option used.
This amount is not a universal application fee for every CAT-accepting college. FMS, MDI, SPJIMR, IIFT, IIT departments and other non-IIM institutions can require separate applications and fees. Some IIM programmes may also have later process requirements specified by the individual institute.
Do not immediately pay again. Check the application dashboard, payment status and registered email. Preserve the bank reference number, transaction ID, amount, date and screenshot. If the status does not resolve according to the portal's guidance, contact the official helpdesk at 1800 210 0175 with the CAT User ID and transaction evidence. Never share a banking PIN, card CVV, password or OTP with a caller claiming to be support staff.
Candidates should not rely on a correction window to repair careless entries. As of the date of this article, the core official schedule confirms registration, admit card and exam dates but does not provide a final correction-window date in the main timeline. If a limited edit facility is announced, the fields that can be changed will be specified by the authority.
Historically, CAT correction windows have allowed only selected changes. They are not a second application period, and sensitive fields such as category may remain locked. Submit an accurate form the first time and monitor official notices after registration closes.
CAT 2026 is scheduled across approximately 170 test cities. The full official city list is available in the registration portal. Candidates select five cities, not five individual venues. The exact test centre, full address, reporting time and session are allotted by the examination authority.
Registering early may reduce last-day technical risk, but it does not create an unconditional right to the first-choice city. Capacity, operational requirements and candidate distribution affect allotment. Once the centre appears on the admit card, change requests are generally difficult and should not be assumed to be available.
Before finalising the city order, evaluate:
travel time from home or hostel;
Sunday morning public-transport availability;
risk of fog, rain, road closures or local events;
train or bus reliability;
accommodation cost for an early reporting time;
availability of a nearby backup city;
safety of the return journey after an evening slot.
After the admit card is released, candidates travelling to an unfamiliar city should verify the route and venue location in advance. A map pin alone is not enough; similarly named institutions or multiple campuses can cause mistakes.
The official CAT 2026 press release confirms a 120-minute examination with three sections. Candidates receive exactly 40 minutes for each section and cannot switch to another section while the current section is active.
| Order | Section | Official time | Recent question-count reference |
| 1 | Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension | 40 minutes | 24 questions in CAT 2025 |
| 2 | Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning | 40 minutes | 22 questions in CAT 2025 |
| 3 | Quantitative Ability | 40 minutes | 22 questions in CAT 2025 |
| Total | Three sections | 120 minutes | 68 questions in CAT 2025 |
The final column is a recent-paper planning reference, not an advance guarantee for CAT 2026. The authority has confirmed the section names and timing but has not promised that the question count will remain 68.
Recent CAT papers have used two broad formats:
Multiple-choice questions, in which the candidate selects an option; and
Type-in-the-answer questions, often called TITA or non-MCQ questions, in which the response is entered through the interface.
Recent marking convention has awarded three marks for a correct answer, deducted one mark for an incorrect MCQ, imposed no negative mark for an incorrect TITA response and awarded zero for an unattempted question. Candidates must verify the CAT 2026 tutorial and on-screen instructions because the official advance release does not guarantee the exact mix or marking rule for every question.
The fixed 40-minute limit changes preparation strategy. A candidate cannot save time in VARC and transfer it to QA. Each section must be independently strong enough to meet target-institute requirements. When the 40 minutes end, the interface moves forward; the candidate cannot return to an earlier section.
The official tutorial, when released, should be used to learn question navigation, the question palette, answer selection, clearing a response, marking a question for review, typing a non-MCQ answer and using the on-screen calculator. A coaching-platform interface can be useful for practice but may not reproduce every official control or colour exactly.
The on-screen calculator is basic. It should not replace arithmetic fluency. For many CAT questions, setting up the problem and estimating efficiently is faster than entering a long calculation.
IIMs do not publish a detailed chapter-by-chapter CAT syllabus with fixed weightage. The official structure names three sections. The practical CAT 2026 syllabus is therefore inferred from recent official papers and the skills repeatedly tested.
This distinction matters. A topic listed below is not guaranteed to appear, and an unlisted presentation of a familiar concept can still be tested. Preparation should develop reasoning and reading ability rather than memorising a predicted question distribution.
| Section | Major preparation areas | What the section broadly tests |
| VARC | Reading comprehension, para summary, paragraph ordering, sentence placement or completion, odd-sentence questions | Comprehension, inference, argument structure, coherence and language reasoning |
| DILR | Tables, charts, caselets, arrangements, distribution, scheduling, games, routes, networks, sets and mixed puzzles | Information organisation, constraint handling, calculation and logical deduction |
| QA | Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number properties and selected modern-mathematics topics | Mathematical modelling, concept selection, accuracy and speed |
Reading comprehension normally forms the larger part of VARC. Passages can draw from philosophy, history, economics, sociology, science, technology, arts, public policy or culture. Subject knowledge is rarely the core requirement; the answer must come from the passage and its argument.
Preparation areas include:
central idea and primary purpose;
inference supported by the passage;
author's tone, position and assumptions;
function of a paragraph or example;
strengthening or weakening an interpretation;
factual questions that require close reading;
application of an argument to a new situation;
para summary;
coherent paragraph ordering;
sentence placement or paragraph completion;
identification of an odd sentence that breaks coherence.
Vocabulary and grammar support comprehension, but recent CAT VARC has not generally behaved like a direct vocabulary or grammar-rule test. Memorising rare words or hundreds of isolated rules should not displace reading, reasoning and passage analysis.
DILR does not follow a narrow formula list. A set can combine data, text and constraints. Common preparation families include:
data tables and missing-value tables;
bar, line and pie representations;
percentage change, ratios, averages and weighted values;
scheduling and timetabling;
linear and circular arrangements;
grouping, selection and distribution;
tournaments, rankings and games;
routes, networks and connectivity;
set theory and Venn-diagram reasoning;
binary logic and conditional statements;
projects, teams, tasks and resource allocation;
caselets with no ready-made chart;
puzzles involving multiple linked conditions.
The decisive skill is set selection. A candidate who solves two or three suitable sets accurately can outperform someone who spends equal time on every set and completes none.
Arithmetic is usually the most useful starting point because it supports direct questions and DILR calculations. Preparation should cover:
percentages and percentage change;
ratios, proportions and variation;
averages and weighted averages;
profit, loss, discount and mark-up;
simple and compound interest;
mixtures, alligation and concentration;
time and work, pipes and combined efficiency;
time, speed and distance, including trains, boats and races;
equations and word-problem translation.
Algebra preparation should include:
linear and quadratic equations;
inequalities and ranges;
functions and graphs;
exponents, roots and logarithms;
sequences and series;
maxima, minima and algebraic identities;
polynomials and factorisation.
Geometry and mensuration preparation should include:
lines, angles and triangles;
similarity, congruence and area relations;
quadrilaterals and polygons;
circles, chords and tangents;
coordinate geometry basics;
two-dimensional mensuration;
cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones and spheres.
Number-system and modern-mathematics preparation can include:
factors, multiples and divisibility;
remainders and cyclicity;
units digits and last digits;
integers, fractions and base representation;
permutations and combinations;
probability;
sets and counting principles.
Topic frequency changes from year to year. Candidates should first master high-utility arithmetic and algebra, then secure geometry and number-system fundamentals, and finally cover lower-frequency topics according to diagnostic evidence.
VARC improves when reading and question analysis are combined. Reading editorials without solving questions can build familiarity with complex prose, but it does not automatically develop CAT accuracy. Similarly, solving passages without reviewing why options are wrong can preserve the same mistakes.
Read 30 to 45 minutes from subjects that feel unfamiliar. Use serious essays, science and social-science publications, book reviews, history writing and long-form journalism. The objective is not to collect facts. It is to identify the author's claim, evidence, contrast, assumptions, tone and conclusion.
After each article, write three short lines:
the main claim;
the role of the strongest example; and
one conclusion the author would probably reject.
This exercise develops passage structure and inference without turning reading into passive scrolling.
Before selecting an option, ask what textual evidence supports it. Wrong CAT options are often attractive because they are broadly true, use words from the passage or sound intellectually plausible. They fail because they are too strong, too narrow, outside the passage, partly correct or based on the reader's opinion.
Use a two-stage method. First eliminate options that contradict or exceed the passage. Then compare the remaining choices for precision. Do not select an answer merely because it repeats a memorable phrase.
For para summary, identify the paragraph's central claim and scope. Reject options that preserve one example but miss the larger point. For paragraph ordering, find logical links such as pronoun references, cause and effect, general-to-specific movement and chronology. For sentence-placement questions, examine the sentences before and after the blank; the inserted sentence must connect in both directions.
TITA verbal questions remove the risk of negative marking under the recent convention, but they can still consume time. Attempt them with a clear structure rather than guessing every possible order.
Use an error log with categories such as:
missed central idea;
unsupported inference;
extreme wording overlooked;
author versus critic confused;
rushed reading;
changed a correct answer without evidence;
unfamiliar sentence structure;
paragraph-linking error.
The value of the log comes from repeated patterns. If most mistakes are unsupported inferences, solving more passages without correcting that habit will not produce a large improvement.
DILR rewards structured exploration. The first few minutes spent understanding a set are not wasted if they reveal whether the set is solvable. The costly mistake is remaining emotionally committed to a set after evidence shows that it is calculation-heavy, ambiguous or resistant to progress.
Convert words into a compact structure:
a table for people, products and attributes;
a timeline for schedules;
slots or positions for arrangements;
a matrix for pairwise conditions;
a network for routes;
sets or a Venn diagram for membership;
equations for linked numerical values.
A good representation reduces memory load and exposes deductions. Rewriting the full paragraph repeatedly wastes time.
During a sectional test or mock, scan all DILR sets before committing. Look for:
familiar structure;
complete and unambiguous data;
one or two direct deductions;
manageable calculations;
questions that can be answered independently;
a representation that becomes clear quickly.
Avoid judging a set only by its topic. A colourful chart may hide lengthy calculations, while a dense paragraph may reduce to a simple table.
If no meaningful structure or deduction emerges after a planned trial period, mark the set and move on. The exact exit time depends on the candidate, but the decision should be made in advance. Staying for twelve minutes simply because six minutes have already been spent is a sunk-cost error.
Post-test review should not stop after reading the solution. Recreate the set without looking, compare the chosen representation with the solution and identify the earliest missed inference. Label the issue:
poor set choice;
correct set but slow representation;
calculation error;
condition omitted;
casework not organised;
question misread.
Over time, this creates a personal set-selection library. The aim is not to memorise a puzzle but to recognise the underlying structure faster.
QA preparation should move through concept, untimed application, timed practice and mixed revision. Attempting only shortcuts can produce fragile performance; studying only theory can produce slow performance.
Take a mixed QA test before designing the timetable. Divide topics into:
strong: concept clear and timed accuracy high;
recoverable: concept known but slow or inconsistent;
weak: concept gaps or repeated errors;
low priority: weak and historically less frequent, to be addressed after core topics.
This prevents an equal-time plan that gives the same hours to percentages and an obscure topic with very different utility.
Memorise useful fraction-percentage equivalents, squares, cubes, multiplication facts and common ratios, but connect them to problems. Practise approximation and option elimination. CAT QA often rewards recognising structure before calculation.
For word problems, define variables carefully and preserve units. A large share of “silly mistakes” are actually modelling mistakes: mixing minutes with hours, cost price with selling price, percentage points with percentage change or individual efficiency with combined work.
After solving a question conventionally, check whether options, ratios, substitution, symmetry or estimation provide a shorter route. Do not collect five tricks for every problem. Retain the method that is fast, reliable and easy to reproduce under pressure.
Revisit a topic after one day, one week and later through mixed tests. A formula notebook should contain only formulas, conditions and mistakes that the candidate actually needs. Copying an entire textbook into notes creates a document that is too large to revise.
Under the recent negative-marking convention for MCQs, a high attempt count with low accuracy can damage the raw score. Build an attempt strategy around confident, solvable questions. A question skipped in 20 seconds can be revisited; a question pursued for five unproductive minutes cannot return that time.
The plan below begins on August 13, 2026. Candidates starting earlier can expand the foundation phase. Those starting later should compress low-priority topic coverage, not eliminate mocks and analysis.
Goals:
submit the CAT 2026 form without errors;
take one full diagnostic mock under strict conditions;
identify strong and weak areas in all three sections;
begin arithmetic and algebra foundations;
solve reading comprehension daily;
practise four to six DILR sets each week;
create an error log and formula notebook.
Do not interpret the first mock percentile as a final prediction. Its purpose is to reveal section timing, attention lapses, concept gaps and question-selection behaviour.
Goals:
finish core arithmetic and major algebra topics;
cover essential geometry and number properties;
develop familiarity with common DILR set families;
practise VARC in timed groups;
take one or two full mocks per week;
review every mock before taking the next one.
Registration closes on September 15 at 5:00 PM. Candidates should complete it well before this phase ends. If the authority opens a limited correction window, use only the official notice and check the submitted form again.
Goals:
take two full-length mocks per week, increasing only if analysis remains complete;
add sectional tests for the weakest section;
solve mixed QA sets rather than chapter-only exercises;
practise DILR scanning and exit decisions;
refine VARC passage order and option elimination;
build a stable attempt strategy for each section.
By late October, preparation should become evidence-led. If the candidate repeatedly solves concepts correctly but runs out of time, the intervention is question selection and timing, not another round of beginner theory.
Goals:
take mocks at the same time of day as different possible CAT sessions;
use the official tutorial when available;
verify the admit card after November 4;
plan travel and identify the centre route;
maintain two to three quality mocks per week if recovery and analysis permit;
revise error patterns and high-frequency concepts.
Do not make every mock a battle for a record percentile. Use some mocks to test a specific improvement, such as leaving a DILR set earlier or reducing speculative VARC attempts.
Goals:
reduce exposure to random new material;
revise formulas, solved mistakes and selected high-quality sets;
take the last full mock early enough to recover calmly;
maintain sleep and meal timing;
prepare admit-card copies, original ID and travel arrangements;
review the official exam-day instructions.
The final week is not the time for ten full mocks, a new 1,000-page book or an extreme sleep schedule. The aim is reliable execution.
Follow the reporting time on the admit card, not a general slot timetable found online. Carry only the permitted documents and items. Use the first moments of each section to settle into the planned process. One difficult passage, set or question does not reveal the difficulty of the entire section.
| Time | Activity |
| 45 minutes | QA concept or mixed practice |
| 45 minutes | One DILR set plus review |
| 45 minutes | RC passage set and verbal ability |
| 30 minutes | Error-log correction and spaced revision |
| 15 minutes | Calculation, reading or formula drill |
On mock days, replace the routine with a 120-minute mock and at least two to three hours of analysis, split across the same or following day.
Use 60 minutes before or after work for the weakest skill and 60 minutes for a second section. Keep short daily reading or calculation practice during commute or lunch only when it is safe and focused. Reserve a longer weekend block for a mock and analysis.
A practical week might contain:
Monday: QA concepts and practice;
Tuesday: VARC timed set and review;
Wednesday: DILR sets;
Thursday: QA mixed test;
Friday: VARC plus error-log revision;
Saturday: full mock;
Sunday: mock analysis and weak-topic repair.
Repeaters should not automatically repeat last year's schedule. Compare old mock records and the actual scorecard. Identify whether the main problem was concept knowledge, section balance, accuracy, panic, test-day execution or college-application strategy.
A repeater with strong concepts should devote more time to mixed tests, selection and analysis. A repeater with a persistent QA gap may still need a focused foundation cycle. Previous familiarity is useful only when it produces different decisions.
Mocks are not merely score generators. They are controlled experiments that reveal how a candidate makes decisions under a fixed clock.
Begin now, even if the syllabus is incomplete. The first few mocks establish a baseline and teach section transitions, attention management and question selection. Waiting until every topic is complete can leave too little time to build test-taking skill.
There is no universal ideal. For many candidates, 20 to 35 thoroughly analysed full mocks are more useful than 60 rushed mocks. A strong candidate may benefit from more; a beginner with major concept gaps may need fewer full mocks and more sectionals initially.
Use this rule: do not increase mock frequency if the previous mock's decisions and errors have not been reviewed. Volume without feedback can train bad habits.
| Metric | Why it matters |
| Attempts | Shows risk level and selection behaviour |
| Accuracy | Reveals whether attempt count is productive |
| Time on correct answers | Identifies slow but successful methods |
| Time on wrong answers | Exposes expensive errors |
| Time on unattempted questions | Shows where time was spent without a score |
| Easy questions missed | Measures selection failure |
| Guesses and changed answers | Reveals avoidable risk |
| Section-wise concentration drop | Helps plan mental resets |
| Error category | Determines the next study action |
First, solve every unattempted or incorrect question without a timer. This distinguishes concept gaps from time pressure.
Second, compare the attempted sequence with a better sequence. Find easy questions that were missed and difficult questions that consumed time.
Third, label each error as conceptual, calculation, comprehension, selection, time-management or attention-related.
Fourth, write one corrective action. “Be careful” is not an action. “Underline the unit before calculating” or “leave a DILR set after four minutes without a table” is actionable.
Fifth, test the correction in a sectional or the next mock. An error log that never changes future behaviour becomes a diary, not a preparation tool.
Use the opening minute to judge passage themes and length, then follow a planned order. Some candidates perform best by completing all reading comprehension first; others begin with selected verbal questions. The correct order is the one supported by mock data.
Do not let one abstract passage consume the section. Answer through evidence, not personal knowledge. When two options remain, compare scope and strength. Avoid changing an answer unless a specific line or logical relation justifies the change.
Scan all sets with discipline. Select the set with the clearest entry point rather than the most familiar topic. Build the representation before answering individual questions. If progress stalls, use the exit rule rehearsed in mocks.
One fully solved set with high accuracy is better than fragments of three sets. After completing a set, quickly verify that all constraints were used and that a local assumption was not treated as a rule.
Use multiple passes. In the first, attempt direct and familiar questions. In the second, solve questions that require more work but have a clear path. Leave opaque or calculation-heavy questions for the end.
Check options, units and sign before submitting. For TITA responses, confirm the expected input format. Do not add a percent sign, unit or extra text unless the interface requires it.
Candidates do not need every popular CAT book. Choose one concept source, one reliable practice source, official previous-year questions and a good mock series.
Commonly used book families include Arun Sharma's quantitative aptitude and DILR books, Nishit Sinha's DILR material, Sarvesh K. Verma's quantitative aptitude book, and Norman Lewis's Word Power Made Easy for foundational vocabulary. Book choice should depend on current level; the newest edition is helpful when it corrects errors or reflects current structure, but the underlying mathematics and reading skills do not expire annually.
For VARC, high-quality reading and official past CAT passages are more valuable than an enormous list of isolated grammar exercises. For DILR, diversity of sets matters. For QA, a smaller number of questions solved and reviewed deeply can be better than thousands of repetitive exercises.
The most valuable resources are:
the official CAT 2026 bulletin and registration guide;
the official tutorial or mock when released;
official previous-year question papers and answer keys;
a timed full-length mock platform with section-level analysis;
a personal error log;
a compact formula and revision notebook.
Students preparing for multiple exams can also compare CAT with XAT, NMAT, SNAP and CMAT. The overlap is useful, but the format, timing, marking, question types and general-awareness requirements differ. Do not use a CAT-only strategy unchanged for every MBA entrance examination.
Yes. Coaching is not an eligibility condition and does not guarantee a percentile. A disciplined self-study candidate can prepare effectively using standard concept resources, official questions, sectionals, mocks and analysis.
Coaching may help when a candidate needs a fixed schedule, concept instruction, doubt resolution or external accountability. Self-study may be better for a candidate who already has strong fundamentals, can diagnose errors honestly and needs schedule flexibility.
Before paying for a course, examine:
quality of teaching rather than promotional topper claims;
number and realism of mocks;
depth of mock analysis;
doubt-solving access;
batch size and recording availability;
refund and access terms;
whether the schedule fits the time remaining;
whether free or lower-cost resources already solve the actual problem.
Do not buy multiple full courses out of anxiety. Switching teachers and methods repeatedly can reduce revision and practice time.
These three terms are related but not interchangeable.
| Term | Meaning |
| Raw score | Marks obtained by applying the question-level marking rules to correct, incorrect and unattempted responses |
| Scaled score | Score after statistical adjustment for differences among test sessions |
| Percentile | Relative position compared with candidates who appeared, calculated from scaled-score ranks |
Under the recent CAT marking convention, the simplified raw-score expression is:
Raw score = 3 × correct answers − 1 × incorrect MCQ answers
Incorrect TITA answers and unattempted questions have historically received zero rather than a negative mark. The CAT 2026 on-screen instructions remain the final authority.
A raw score can be negative in a section if incorrect MCQs outnumber the marks earned from correct answers. CAT does not require candidates to attempt every question.
CAT 2026 will take place in three sessions, with different question forms. Even when the test blueprint is consistent, one session or section can be somewhat harder than another. Normalisation adjusts raw section scores statistically to make candidates across sessions comparable.
The process considers score distributions and performance within and across sessions. Section scores are scaled separately, and the overall scaled score is derived from the section-level results. Candidates cannot accurately reproduce the final scaling from their own response sheet because the full population data is not available to them.
Normalisation can move a raw score slightly upward or downward. It is wrong to assume that a particular slot will automatically receive favourable scaling based on early social-media reactions.
A percentile represents relative rank, not the percentage of marks obtained. A 99 percentile does not mean 99% marks or 99% accuracy. It means the candidate performed better than approximately 99% of the comparison group under the official ranking method.
The standard percentile expression can be written as:
Percentile = ((N − r) / N) × 100
Here, N is the number of candidates who appeared and r is the rank based on the relevant scaled score, subject to official tie and rounding rules.
If 250,000 candidates appear, a 99 percentile is associated roughly with the top 2,500 positions, although ties and rounding affect the displayed percentile. The scorecard reports percentiles to two decimal places.
No one can provide an exact CAT 2026 score-to-percentile table before the test is completed, responses are evaluated and session scores are normalised. Any table published before then is a forecast.
Post-result analyses of CAT 2025, including this CAT 2025 score-versus-percentile analysis, commonly placed the overall scaled score for 99 percentile in the mid-80s, around 95 percentile near 60, around 90 percentile near 50 and around 80 percentile in the high 30s. These are broad historical reference points, not CAT 2026 targets. Question count, difficulty, candidate performance and scaling can change the relationship substantially.
| Percentile reference | Broad CAT 2025 post-result range | How to use it for CAT 2026 |
| 99 | Mid-80s | Historical orientation only |
| 95 | Around 60 | Do not treat as a guaranteed threshold |
| 90 | Around 50 | Build a buffer rather than targeting the minimum |
| 80 | High 30s | Institute options depend on more than percentile |
The more reliable target is behaviour: maximise correct answers from questions within reach, protect sectional balance and reduce unproductive time. A fixed raw-score obsession can cause panic if the paper is harder than expected.
There is no single CAT 2026 cut-off. Four different numbers are often confused:
the minimum CAT eligibility requirement, which concerns graduation marks;
an institute's qualifying CAT percentile, below which a candidate is normally not considered;
the effective interview-call percentile, which can be higher because shortlisting is competitive; and
the final admitted profile, which combines CAT performance with other components.
An IIM may publish minimum overall and sectional percentiles, but meeting them does not guarantee a call. Academic record, category, programme, work experience, diversity rules and the number of eligible applicants can raise the effective threshold.
The following bands are planning guidance, not official cut-offs:
| Overall percentile band | General planning interpretation |
| 99+ | Competitive for consideration at several highly selective institutions, subject to sectional and profile criteria |
| 95–99 | Strong range with multiple IIM and non-IIM possibilities; exact options depend heavily on profile and category |
| 90–95 | Viable for a broad group of reputable programmes, but not a guarantee at any named institute |
| 80–90 | Can open options at a range of schools; fees, outcomes, specialisation and fit need careful comparison |
| Below 80 | Some CAT-accepting programmes remain, but candidates should evaluate quality and ROI and consider other exams |
Reserved-category candidates should use the official category-specific admission policy of each programme rather than a general internet table. Lower published qualifying percentiles do not remove sectional, academic or interview requirements.
Many IIMs use a minimum percentile in VARC, DILR and QA in addition to the overall percentile. A candidate with an excellent overall result can miss a shortlist because one section is below the threshold. Preparation should therefore protect the weakest section instead of maximising only a favourite section.
Create three college groups:
ambitious: programmes where the current profile would need an exceptional CAT result and strong selection performance;
realistic: programmes where the profile and likely percentile range are broadly aligned; and
safe: credible programmes with thresholds below the expected range and acceptable outcomes.
Then read each programme's latest official admission policy. Record overall and sectional cut-offs, academic-score formula, work-experience treatment, diversity points, interview weight and separate application deadline. Update the sheet when CAT 2026-based policies are published.
The revised official CAT 2026 Information Bulletin lists 22 IIMs, including IIM Guwahati.
| IIM | IIM | IIM |
| IIM Ahmedabad | IIM Amritsar | IIM Bangalore |
| IIM Bodh Gaya | IIM Calcutta | IIM Guwahati |
| IIM Indore | IIM Jammu | IIM Kashipur |
| IIM Kozhikode | IIM Lucknow | IIM Mumbai |
| IIM Nagpur | IIM Raipur | IIM Ranchi |
| IIM Rohtak | IIM Sambalpur | IIM Shillong |
| IIM Sirmaur | IIM Tiruchirappalli | IIM Udaipur |
| IIM Visakhapatnam |
The programme list in the bulletin extends beyond the two-year flagship MBA/PGP. It includes specialised, executive, analytics, human-resources, sustainability and doctoral options at different institutes. Eligibility varies. Candidates should not select a programme solely because its name appears in the CAT form.
The CAT form allows candidates to select eligible IIM programmes listed in the application without paying the CAT fee separately for each selection. Individual institutes can still require later registrations, expressions of interest or supplementary steps. Follow every email and institute notice after the result.
Many leading non-IIM institutions use CAT scores, but each requires independent verification for the 2027 admission cycle. Examples that have used CAT for relevant management programmes include:
Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi;
SPJIMR Mumbai;
MDI Gurgaon;
Indian Institute of Foreign Trade;
Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi;
SJMSOM, IIT Bombay;
VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur;
DoMS, IIT Madras;
management programmes at IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad;
IMT Ghaziabad;
IMI New Delhi;
Goa Institute of Management;
Great Lakes Institute of Management;
K J Somaiya Institute of Management;
MICA Ahmedabad, where CAT can form one part of a separate selection route that also includes MICAT requirements;
LBSIM New Delhi;
BIM Tiruchirappalli; and
XIME Bengaluru.
This is not an official exhaustive CAT 2026 participating-institute list. The CAT portal publishes the non-IIM member institutions registered to use CAT scores. A listing does not represent IIM endorsement, equivalence or accreditation. Candidates must verify programme recognition, application deadline, fee, placements and selection rules on the institution's own website.
Non-IIM application deadlines can close before the CAT result and sometimes before the examination. Make a deadline tracker with:
institution and programme;
official application URL;
deadline and time;
application fee;
CAT score accepted and admission year;
sectional requirements;
essay, profile or work-experience fields;
interview stage;
scholarship deadline.
Missing a separate form cannot usually be repaired by asking CAT authorities to send the score later.
Percentile fit is only the first filter. Before applying or accepting an offer, evaluate:
programme approval, degree or diploma status and awarding institution;
total academic fee, hostel, food, deposit and other compulsory costs;
audited or official placement report for the relevant graduating batch;
batch size and number of students who participated in placement;
median salary, average salary and distribution rather than only the highest package;
role quality, function, sector and recruiter repeat rate;
summer-internship outcomes;
faculty, curriculum and specialisation strength;
alumni base and location;
loan burden and realistic post-tax repayment;
refund rules and withdrawal deadline.
A high “highest package” can describe one outlier and may include an international role or unusual variable pay. Median compensation and role distribution usually provide a more stable picture. Compare figures from the same placement year and the same programme; do not mix 2026 fees with an older salary report without labelling the years.
The official schedule states that the admit card will be available from November 4, 2026, until the examination date. Download it from the candidate login on iimcat.ac.in. The authority does not need to mail a physical copy for the candidate to act.
Verify:
candidate name and photograph;
signature;
CAT User ID or registration number;
date and session;
reporting and gate-closing time;
test-centre name and complete address;
category and PwBD information, where shown;
exam-day instructions.
If a material detail is wrong or the admit card cannot be downloaded, contact the official helpdesk promptly. Do not wait until November 28.
Print the admit card according to the instructions, preferably on A4 paper with all text and photographs clear. If the card directs the candidate to affix a matching photograph or sign only in front of an invigilator, follow that instruction exactly.
The admit card and official test-day notice override general guidance. Rules can change, so use this section as preparation rather than a substitute for the actual instructions.
printed CAT 2026 admit card in the required format;
original valid photo identity document accepted by the instructions;
any PwBD, scribe or medical documents specifically required;
only other items expressly permitted by the authority.
The name and photograph on the identity document should allow reliable verification. A digital image stored on a phone may not replace the original physical ID when the instructions require an original.
Phones, smartwatches, electronic calculators, earbuds, notes, loose paper and other electronic or written material are generally prohibited. The centre normally provides the approved writing pad and pen for rough work and the test interface contains the permitted calculator.
Do not assume the venue will store bags, laptops, helmets or valuables. Travel light and follow clothing, footwear and jewellery restrictions printed on the admit card.
Reporting and gate-closing times vary by allotted session. Reach according to the admit card, allowing for traffic, security and identity verification. Arriving after the gate closes can result in denial of entry even if the candidate is present before the test's nominal start time.
read the on-screen instructions before beginning;
check that the displayed candidate and section details are correct;
use only the provided writing material;
follow invigilator instructions;
do not communicate with another candidate;
manage the 40-minute sectional clock independently;
report a genuine technical issue immediately rather than attempting unauthorised troubleshooting;
submit all required rough material before leaving.
If a computer issue occurs, remain calm and alert the invigilator. Time or machine handling follows centre procedures. Do not abandon the station or restart equipment on your own.
After the examination, the authority normally releases candidate responses and a provisional answer key through the login. The CAT 2026 release date and objection period have not been officially announced at the time of writing.
When the response sheet is available:
download it immediately;
save the question, marked response and official provisional answer information;
calculate only a provisional raw score using the applicable marking rules;
do not treat a coaching percentile predictor as the final result;
review disputed questions against rigorous evidence.
An objection should be filed only through the official process, within the deadline and with the required fee and justification. A disagreement based only on personal interpretation is weak; use the passage, mathematical proof or authoritative reasoning relevant to the question.
The authority reviews objections and publishes or applies the final answer key. Depending on the decision, an objection fee may be non-refundable unless the official rules specify otherwise.
The result is likely to be declared by the first week of January 2027. Candidates will download the scorecard from the official CAT portal using their credentials. The CAT 2026 score remains valid until December 31, 2027.
The scorecard is expected to show:
section-wise scaled scores;
section-wise percentiles;
overall scaled score; and
overall percentile.
Download and retain multiple copies because login access may not remain convenient indefinitely. A CAT percentile is not an admission letter. Candidates must continue with institute-specific applications, shortlist forms and selection rounds.
Each IIM applies its programme-specific policy. The process may include minimum section-wise and overall percentiles, academic-performance scores, work-experience points and diversity factors. Some institutes use a common interview process with other IIMs; others run independent processes.
Candidates may need to complete a post-CAT form or expression of interest within a short window. Check official institute websites even if no email appears in the inbox.
Depending on the institute, the next stage can include a Written Ability Test, Personal Interview, Group Discussion or another assessment. Prepare to discuss academic subjects, work, internships, career decisions, current affairs, hobbies and the reasons for pursuing the programme.
Good interview preparation is evidence-based. A candidate should know the facts entered in every form and be able to explain gaps or transitions honestly. Fabricated work achievements or copied “perfect answers” are easy to probe.
Final merit lists combine components according to the published formula. CAT weight may be significant but not absolute. A candidate with a lower CAT percentile can sometimes rank higher in final selection because of stronger academics or interview performance, while a very high percentile does not compensate for every other weakness.
If several offers arrive, compare programme quality, total cost, location, roles, batch size, career goal and financial risk. Do not choose solely by a social-media ranking or the single highest placement figure.
waiting until September 15 to begin the form;
entering a nickname instead of the documented name;
selecting the wrong category or unsupported reservation claim;
using an unofficial CGPA conversion;
entering selected-subject marks instead of the required aggregate;
omitting IIM programmes that the candidate would genuinely consider;
uploading a blurred photograph, signature or certificate;
assuming a saved but unpaid form is submitted;
failing to download the final application PDF and receipt.
delaying mocks until the syllabus is “complete”;
taking mocks without analysis;
collecting too many books and courses;
ignoring the weakest section because the overall mock percentile looks acceptable;
memorising predicted question counts as an official pattern;
practising only favourite topics;
solving DILR sets without learning set selection;
reading VARC explanations passively;
using shortcuts without concept clarity;
changing strategy after every poor mock.
arriving based on an internet slot time instead of the admit card;
carrying prohibited electronics or valuables;
spending too long on the first difficult question or set;
guessing many MCQs to raise attempts;
forgetting the sectional time lock;
typing units or symbols into TITA fields without checking format;
treating one hard section as evidence that the entire paper is ruined;
discussing questions or violating centre instructions.
believing that CAT registration automatically covers non-IIM applications;
missing programme-specific deadlines;
confusing a minimum qualifying cut-off with a likely interview-call percentile;
applying without checking total fee and official placement data;
presenting unverifiable work experience;
preparing for interviews only after receiving the call;
ignoring document discrepancies until verification.
CAT 2026 will be held on Sunday, November 29, 2026. The examination will be conducted in three sessions at centres across approximately 170 test cities. The candidate's actual session, reporting time and venue will appear on the admit card.
IIM Indore is the conducting institute for CAT 2026. It is administering the test on behalf of the Indian Institutes of Management.
Yes. Registration opened on August 3, 2026, at 10:00 AM and is scheduled to close on September 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM. The application must be submitted and the payment completed through iimcat.ac.in.
The fee is ₹2,700 for General, EWS and NC-OBC candidates. It is ₹1,350 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. The CAT fee is non-refundable and does not replace separate application fees charged by non-IIM colleges.
A candidate needs a recognised bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. The requirement is 45% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Final-year students, candidates awaiting results and holders of specified professional qualifications can also apply under the official conditions.
Yes. A student in the final year of a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification can register. If selected, admission remains provisional until the candidate submits the completion proof required by the concerned institute.
No upper age limit is specified. A candidate of any age can take CAT if the academic eligibility conditions are satisfied.
No. Fresh graduates can take CAT 2026 and join eligible management programmes. Work experience can influence admission scores at some institutes but is not a general CAT registration requirement.
CAT does not impose a fixed lifetime attempt limit. A candidate may take the test again in a later year, subject to that year's registration and eligibility rules.
The backlog itself does not create a universal registration ban. The candidate must still complete the degree and satisfy the marks and document requirements within the deadlines of the target programme.
Yes. Candidates with CA, CS, ICWA/CMA or FIAI qualifications can apply if they meet the applicable percentage condition in the CAT 2026 eligibility document.
Use the conversion method certified by the university or institution. If no method exists, follow the equivalence rule in the official CAT eligibility document. Do not use an unofficial online multiplier simply because it gives a higher percentage.
The test duration is 120 minutes. There are three sections, and candidates receive exactly 40 minutes for each section. They cannot switch between sections.
The sections are Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. They appear in that order under the recent and officially stated structure.
The advance official release has not guaranteed an exact question count. CAT 2025 had 68 questions: 24 VARC, 22 DILR and 22 QA. Use that as a planning reference, not as a confirmed CAT 2026 promise.
Recent CAT papers have deducted one mark for an incorrect MCQ and imposed no negative mark for an incorrect TITA response. Correct answers have carried three marks. Candidates must confirm the rule in the official CAT 2026 tutorial and question instructions.
No detailed official chapter-wise syllabus or topic weightage is published. Preparation is based on the three confirmed sections and the concepts repeatedly seen in official previous-year papers.
The difficulty cannot be known before the examination. It also varies by section and by candidate strengths. A harder paper usually lowers the raw score needed for a given percentile; preparation should focus on selection and accuracy rather than predicting an “easy” or “hard” year.
Candidates use the basic on-screen calculator provided in the CAT interface. Personal calculators, phones and smartwatches are not permitted. Check the admit-card instructions for the final list of prohibited items.
No. Candidates choose five preferred test cities during registration, but the examination authority allots the final city, venue and session. The admit card contains the binding details.
Candidates can select five cities in order of preference. Allotment is subject to capacity and operational feasibility.
The official schedule states that admit cards will be available from November 4, 2026, until November 29, 2026. Candidates should download them from the official portal and verify every detail promptly.
Carry the printed admit card and an original valid photo ID accepted by the official instructions. PwBD or scribe-related candidates should also carry the documents specified for them. Do not add items merely because they were permitted in another examination.
No official release date has been announced yet. The provisional key and response sheet are normally released after the test, followed by a short objection window.
The official information says the result is likely by the first week of January 2027. A specific December date based on past trends should not be described as confirmed.
The CAT 2026 score is valid until December 31, 2027. It is intended for the associated admission cycle and cannot be assumed to remain valid for later intakes.
The score represents performance under the marking and scaling process. Percentile represents relative standing among candidates. A 99 percentile is not equal to 99% marks.
It cannot be known in advance. CAT 2025 post-result analyses commonly placed 99 percentile around the mid-80s in overall scaled score, but CAT 2026 difficulty, performance distribution and normalisation can shift the number.
It may satisfy or exceed the published qualifying level for some programmes and categories, but it does not guarantee a call. Sectional percentiles, category, academics, work experience, diversity and programme-specific criteria all matter.
No. These and most other non-IIM institutions require separate applications. Their deadlines and fees are independent of the CAT registration deadline.
The revised official bulletin lists 22 IIMs, including IIM Guwahati. Programme options and eligibility differ across institutes.
Yes, especially with a focused plan. The candidate should diagnose current ability, prioritise high-utility topics, begin mocks immediately, analyse errors and protect all three sections. Three months is insufficient for unfocused resource collection but enough for disciplined improvement.
Study quality and baseline matter more than a universal number. Two focused hours on weekdays and a longer weekend mock-analysis block can work for a professional. A full-time student may use three to five hours. The plan should remain sustainable through November.
Many candidates can benefit from 20 to 35 thoroughly analysed full mocks, along with sectionals. The correct number depends on starting level and analysis quality. A mock taken without review has limited value.
Yes. CAT QA uses school-level mathematical concepts applied under time pressure. Non-engineers may need more foundation practice, but a mathematics degree is not required.
No general-knowledge section appears in the confirmed CAT 2026 structure. Current affairs can still matter later in business-school interviews and in other entrance tests such as XAT.
Recent VARC papers focus more on reading, inference, summary and paragraph coherence than direct grammar-rule questions. Grammar knowledge helps comprehension and expression but should not replace passage practice.
All three sections should begin together because each has a fixed 40-minute limit. Within QA, arithmetic and algebra are high-utility starting points. In VARC, begin daily reading and RC practice. In DILR, start with standard representations and set selection.

CAT 2026 is now an active application and preparation cycle, not a tentative future event. The confirmed priorities are straightforward: submit an accurate form before September 15, download and verify the admit card from November 4, and prepare for a 120-minute test on November 29 with three locked 40-minute sections.
The uncertain parts should remain uncertain. The final question count, difficulty, score-to-percentile conversion and interview cut-offs cannot be promised before the relevant official release or admission policy. Candidates who recognise this can spend less time chasing predictions and more time improving the decisions that affect the result: choosing the right questions, protecting accuracy, analysing mocks and maintaining balanced sectional performance.
The best next step is to complete registration, take a diagnostic mock and build a 108-day plan around personal evidence. After the examination, continue tracking separate college applications and prepare for interviews without waiting for the scorecard.
